Play-in Resonance & Tone Quality

The sound characteristics of stringed instruments such as guitars are dependent on a number of factors including the complexity of the construction involving the mounting of different parts with individual vibration behaviours. The sound quality can be improved by regular playing, as mechanical wood properties implied in acoustical quality, especially the viscoelasticity (often referred to as damping) are dependent on exposure time to vibrations. Moisture content in wood also influences the vibration behaviour determining tone colour changes.

When the instrument is played, vibrations from the strings are transmitted to the various wood parts of the main body. Vibrations are changing wood properties of an acoustic or electric guitar at molecular level, affecting the way it responds. As a result, the instrument becomes more resonant, producing a richer sound with improved tone characteristics and sustain.
